Whistle Down the Wind by Mary Hayley Bell is a charming tale of a group of farm children who mistake an escaped convict hiding in their manger for Jesus Christ, after he exclaims this when discovered. Touching drama and comedy unfold as they try to protect him from the grown ups.

It is beautifully narrated by actress Hayley Mills, the author's /5(21). Overall, for me the book was a slow paced, thinly veiled historical read with a touch of light romance. A good read if you’re not going to get hung up on the lack of Bell on the wind book or details, but Close to the Wind was not the swashbuckling adventure I was hoping for.
